President’s Message

Greetings and welcome to the 2018-2019 academic year!

The mission of the Delaware American Council on Education Women’s Network (DAWN) is to promote the advancement of women leaders in higher education. Last year at this time Dr. LaVerne Harmon was named president of Wilmington University. As a founding member of DAWN, Dr. Harmon’s achievements have been especially impactful. We have seen her overcome many obstacles and persevere, showing true leadership. Around the same time last year, Dr. Wilma Mishoe was name the first woman to Chair the Board of Trustees at Delaware State University. This past January, Dr. Mishoe was named the interim president of DSU and just last month, was named president. Dr. Mishoe is the University’s first female president. Congratulations, Dr. Mishoe and Dr. Harmon!

With so much to celebrate, we begin the academic year inspired. This summer the DAWN Executive Committee held our annual planning retreat. During the retreat, Past President, Maribeth Dockety, asked us to choose words that describe DAWN. Our discussion confirmed that we are dedicated to advancing women in higher education. How do we do it? We provide opportunities for women in higher education to collaborate and network with each other. We strive to plan innovative, efficient and inclusive events that give women relevant and cutting edge leadership skills. Virtually everything we do is designed to achieve one goal: to be a valuable resource to you as you progress in your career!

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Past President, Maribeth Dockety for her exemplary leadership as president this past year. She led us through extraordinary events, from the awards dinner in October, where your colleagues were recognized as leaders and rising stars, to the Leadership Summit this past spring featuring keynote speaker Dr. Bethany Hall-Long. Thank you, Maribeth!

This year we are excited to welcome Dr. Regina Allen-Sharpe as DAWN Vice President, Deborah Harbaugh as DAWN Treasurer and Dr. Lynda Fuller as DAWN Secretary.

Be sure to invite your colleagues to become a member or join us at an upcoming event to find out more about DAWN! I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.

Sincerely,

Jessica Fehnel

DAWN President
