Greetings from DAWN President:
Welcome to the 2017-2018 academic year and thank you for making DAWN a professional development priority. As you may have heard we have much to celebrate this coming year: our annual October Awards dinner, networking events and of course, the Leadership Summit to be held in March.
Your Executive Committee worked hard during their annual Summer Retreat to plan for the year ahead and celebrate the many accomplishments of the past year.
Your Past President, Dr. Kimberley Sudler provided the Board with more efficient ways to reach out to each other through virtual meetings and an electronic voting procedure to vote for DAWN officers. She was also instrumental in bringing Dr. Gangone to our Leadership Summit as the keynote speaker. Dr. Gangone shared a lot about ACE and their support for women as they aspire to leadership roles in higher education.
I want to congratulate our newest officer, Jessica Fehnel, DAWN Vice President and Dr. Fatma Abdel-Raouf, who has agreed to be our DAWN Treasurer for another term. Fatma will mentor a candidate for next year’s treasurer position.
Many thanks to LeaNora Ruffin, JD, ACC, past President and Dr. Kimberley Sudler as the outgoing President who led us with professional grace. Lisa Terranova is serving her second year as DAWN Secretary and we appreciate her effort and enthusiasm.
This year, we will continue to inspire women to “go for their gold” in higher education by encouraging and inspiring them to “be their best selves”. This may include attaining a new position, taking on a leadership role, or volunteering to be involved in a facet of higher education that they never thought possible.
One of our best role models for “moving the needle” in senior leadership is Dr. LaVerne Harmon. LaVerne is the newly installed President of Wilmington University and former DAWN President. She has always been a supporter for those who work hard and care about others, especially our students. If you didn’t see the July issue of Delaware Today, you must read the article by Kim Hoey, entitled, “Hard Work, Determination — and Caring, New Wilmington University President LaVerne Harmon proves that it pays off”. Please renew your membership and encourage colleagues to join during our Membership Drive which is open now. We will open the nomination process for Rising Star and Leadership Awards on the website. We will recognize our award winners at the annual Fall Awards Dinner.
Please spread the word to your colleagues about the Delaware ACE Women’s Network. I look forward to serving as your DAWN President this year and supporting your leadership journey.
